SPT- Segmented Plasma Wind Tunnel

Tekna’s Segmented DC Arc Torch (SPT) replicates flight conditions at lower altitudes and higher velocities where the conditions are the most difficult. Its design allows for a very stable, fixed-length arc discharge leading to an overall higher enthalpy range.  

 

SEGMENTED TORCH TECHNOLOGY

Key features:

  • Arc Stability: The presence of insulated floating rings or controlled anode segments limits the movement of the arc attachment point to the final stage of the torch. This stabilizes the arc column, significantly reducing arc voltage fluctuations and resulting in a more homogeneous and consistent plasma jet.
  • Flexibility: By adjusting the length of the torch, the characteristics and power level of the plasma column can be tailored to specific testing requirements.
  • Efficiency: Superior arc stability and control often lead to improved electrothermal efficiency and reduced heat losses to the torch walls.
  • High Enthalpy: The SPT torch is capable of achieving higher enthalpy levels at a given torch pressure.
  • High Power: SPT technology is well suited for high-power operation, reaching power levels of up to 40 MW or more while maintaining high efficiency.
  • High Torch Pressure: This technology also enables higher torch pressures, which are essential for achieving the plasma velocities and stagnation pressures required on the test sample.
